We are blessed and honored to present the Journey to Bethlehem on the first three weekends (Saturday & Sunday) in December - Dec. 5-6, 12-13 and 19-20, from 6-9 p.m. It all takes place on 3-acres here at Global Family Fellowship. It's a FREE outdoor event.
The Journey to Bethlehem is a one act, outdoor drama set in the small town of Bethlehem on the night of Jesus Birth. Small groups of visitors to the city are escorted by guides through the traditional and familiar scenes of the events of that first Christmas night. Bridging the gap between imagination and reality, it confronts visitors with a real city and a real Savior. At the end of the tour, the visitors must answer Jesus’ question, “Who do you say that I am?”
This is a 21st century interpretation of those settings and events based on Scripture, archeology and some religious traditions. This is not a strictly historical recreation, but “Bethlehem as it should have been” according to modern eyes. Many Jewish traditions, necessary at the time to preserve their national and religious identity, have been replaced with New Testament interpretations of godly living. Historically, Jewish society was freer than most of their contemporaries, although they would seem very restrictive by the standards of today.
There is no slavery or separation between Jew and Gentile or male and female or discrimination because of livelihood or social standing. Women have roles that at that time would have been exclusively those of men. The visitors have access to many things that strangers would historically have been denied. A special emphasis has been placed on the family of Israel under the fatherhood of God.
The portrayals are geared toward children and adult memories of childhood stories of Jesus’ birth, to rekindle the wonder of a child at the miracle of Christmas. Artistic license is taken to make things more exciting and colorful than the original, although general styles of clothing and sets remain true to biblical models. Some traditional elements are included that are not a part of the biblical narrative.
The main purpose of The Journey to Bethlehem is to reach a world so desperate for love and hope by serving as a picture of God’s great and abounding love toward His children. To those familiar with the story of Jesus, it is an opportunity to be a part of the biblical story – to see it, touch it, feel it. To those who are not, it is an introduction to new life in Christ.
