Morning Star Fishermen

Hans Geissler’s avocation is to help solve world hunger! The concept of Morning Star Fishermen began when he was visiting Guatemala and Mexico in 1990. Troubled by the dire poverty he saw there, he realized, “If I could somehow show these people how to raise fish as a reliable source of high-protein, fresh, nutritious food, just think how many of these poor people could be fed!”

Morning Star Fishermen (MSF) owns a 11-acre site in central Florida which includes a fish hatchery and training center. Two fish hatcheries on the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico have also been established. MSF’s mission is to combat malnutrition in the developing world by promoting Tilapia aquaculture on a small to medium scale.

The aquaculture courses held at the training center will teach students the basic skills necessary to successfully breed and grow Tilapia on a practical, self sustaining, “backyard” scale.

MSF breeds and grows Cichlid or Tilapia (also called Nile Perch). The fish has been researched extensively, and was even chosen because of its characteristics to be the most likely candidates for fish farming in the new international space station. The fish that traveled with Senator John Glenn in the Space Shuttle in 1998 now resides in the Florida Aquarium in nearby Tampa, Florida.
